  This species is legally protected in India under Schedule II of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
 

Charaxes bharata C. & R. Felder, [1867] - Indian Nawab

No subspecies are listed under this species. It was earlier treated as a population of Charaxes athamas – Common Nawab but recent molecular phylogenetic work (Toussaint et al. 2015) has suggested this to be a distinct species. It is uncertain where the Andamanese Charaxes andamanicus Fruhstorfer, 1906, which was also treated as a subspecies of Charaxes athamas – Common Nawab, will fit following this taxonomic change.
