Butterfly Parks and Butterfly Conservatories: These are great places to study the behaviour, lifecycles and other aspects of the biology of common as well as rare, endemic and endangered species, and to assist in their conservation efforts. Biodiversity Marathons: Biodiversity Marathons are outreach programmes conducted by the National Centre for Biological Science, Bengaluru, which is a centre of Tata Instiute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, in collaboration with other research institutions and nature-related NGOs. These are biodiversity information data marathons (no actual running involved!) that link scientists, naturalists, photographers and other citizens who study, observe, photograph and care about nature and biodiversity, and who want to help generate biodiversity information in India. This feeds into the Biodiversity Atlas – India's family of natural history websites, including this one on butterflies, that serve a powerful platform for citizen-contributed information on Indian biodiversity. The Big Butterfly Month: The Big Butterfly Month is a celebration of butterflies aimed at conducting a nationwide citizen science survey to help us assess the health of our environment. A first of its kind event to be launched on 5th September 2020, it will run through the whole month. More than 25 organisations from across the nation covering 22 states and 2 Union Territories will participate. The count will run from 14th to 20th September, with various competitions, talks, quizzes and webinars organised as part of outreach to students and the public at large running for the whole month. National Butterfly of India - a Citizen Poll: Butterflies are ambassadors of nature conservation, and they are important biological indicators that reflect the health of our environment. To create awareness about butterflies among the citizens of India and to celebrate our national natural treasures, we butterfly enthusiasts and nature-lovers from all over the country have gathered as a National Butterfly Campaign Consortium to nominate India's National Butterfly. We already have our National Bird, National Animal, National Flower and National Tree, but we still do not have the National Butterfly. Considering the ecological importance, conservation significance, and growing popularity of butterflies among the general public, it is high time we nominate the National Butterfly. In a true democratic manner, we believe that ordinary citizens should drive this effort, which might be a first for India. Read more ...
