Subspecies in India
(1) Caprona alida alida (de Nicéville, 1891) – Myanmarese Lesser Angle
(2) Caprona alida yerburyi Evans, 1949 – Terai Lesser Angle
(3) Caprona alida vespa Evans, 1949 – Dakhan Lesser Angle
Taxonomic Information
This is the smallest species of Caprona found in India, with the wingspan of 26–36 mm. The peninsular Indian subspecies is characterised by the unmistakable ochreous colouration of the wings on the upper side, and white colouration with well-defined small black spots below. The white-spotted black form, which is found in parts of NE India to SE Asia, may be easily distinguished from the similar Caprona agama – Spotted Angle (wingspan 42–46 mm) by its considerably smaller size. All three species of Indian Caprona have distinctive male genitalia, which will be illustrated here in due time.
This species was previously listed here as the Alida Angle, but Lesser Angle is a descriptive name, so it is preferred here.
