Another subspecies was listed under this species, as Papilio bootes janaka Moore, [1858] – Himalayan Tailed Redbreast. That is now raised as a distinct species, Papilio janaka - Red-banded Mormon. See further information here and on the species page of Papilio janaka - Red-banded Mormon.

Papilio janaka - Red-banded Mormon occurs in the Himalaya, and P. bootes largely occurs in NE India.
