Subspecies in India
(1) Megisba malaya thwaitesi Moore, [1881] – Tailless Malayan. This was earlier treated as a distinct species on this website. Recent work (male genitalia and molecular sequencing) has confirmed this to be a subspecies of Megisba malaya – Malayan, after all.
(2) Megisba malaya sikkima Moore, 1884 – Variable Malayan
(3) Megisba malaya presbyter Fruhstorfer, 1918 – Andaman Malayan
Conservation and Special status
This species is legally protected in India under Schedule II of the WildLife (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022.

This species has been recorded so far from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal, within the Indian limits.
This is a common species.
