Subspecies in India:
(1) Bhagadatta austenia austenia (Moore, 1872) – Khasi Grey Commodore. Subspecies purpurascens has also been listed, but this appears to be an individual form rather than a valid subspecies, so this should be treated as a synonym of the nominotypical subspecies.
purpurascens, which should be treated as a synonym of ssp. austenia, is legally protected in India under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The subspecies austenia is legally protected in India under Schedule II of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
